The Convention at a Glance

General Chairs Thomas M. Gorman and Donald A. Bender and the members of the Inland Empire Section invite you to attend the 63rd Forest Products Society International Convention on June 21-23, 2009, in Boise, Idaho. Nestled on a high desert plain in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains with a pristine river flowing through its center, Boise is Idaho's welcoming capital city. Our host hotel, the Doubletree Hotel Boise-Riverside, is located alongside the Boise River, allowing convenient access to the Greenbelt trail for walking, biking, floating, and fishing. Quite fittingly, Boise is known as the City of Trees.

This annual event focuses on networking and information exchange. This year's Convention will include 21 Technical Sessions with over 100 20-minute presentations beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing throughout the day on Monday and Tuesday. These technical sessions cover a multitude of forest products and wood science subject areas. In addition, more than 75 poster presentations will be offered during two separate poster forums scheduled on Monday and Tuesday.

In the General Session on Monday morning, participants from leading architectural firms will discuss innovative uses of forest products and sustainable design. After highlighting some of their creative projects, they will challenge the audience to develop forest products with new attributes, forms, assembly methods, aesthetics, and sustainability metrics. This promises to be a stimulating forum to help forest products industry, academic, and government professionals explore new uses and architectural applications for wood materials.

In recognition of the importance of students to the future of our industry and the Society, special activities for students will be held throughout the Convention. The Second Annual Student Wood Science Bowl will be held on Sunday following the Student Appreciation Luncheon. Tuesday provides an opportunity for sponsors to "Take a Student to Lunch." After the Convention, students may also participate in the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) student poster competition on Wednesday.

Taking advantage of Boise's enjoyable summer climate, the Paul Bunyan Party will be in the beautiful Idaho Botanical Garden just outside of the city. The Garden is a living museum, dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of gardening, horticulture, and conservation. Numerous specialty gardens and nature trails exist within this 33-acre site.

Be sure to include Boise in your summer travel plans to be a part of this year's FPS International Convention. On behalf of the Planning Committee and the FPS staff, we invite you to join us in Boise/

General Session

The title of this year's general session on Monday morning is Expanding the Potential of Wood: An Appeal from Architects. Wood has always been an important material in architectural design. With intense consumer interest in green buildings, energy efficiency, and recycling, there is a great potential for expanding the value and utility of wood in the built environment.
