California
A southern California tourist has filed a class action racketeering lawsuit against local taxi and limo companies and several strip clubs. The I-Team has done several investigations into kickbacks of up to USD 100 that strip clubs pay to limo and taxi drivers who bring in customers. The lawsuit alleges the cabbies and strip clubs are working together in a USD 40 million a year extortion scheme. In essence, the tourist claims some drivers illegally divert customers to clubs that pay more, sometimes against the passengers' wishes. The lawsuit quotes I-Team reports in which cab drivers reveal how the process works. The man who filed the suit claims he was trying to go to the strip club Play It Again Sam's, but the cab driver repeatedly lied about the club and instead took him to Spearmint Rhino. Jun 3, 2009
Virgin Trains
Airlines Driven Out of Skies by Virgin Trains' High Frequency Service. Increasingly passengers are choosing rail over air for their journeys between two of the country's biggest commercial hubs. Latest figures from the Civil Aviation Authority show that operator Virgin Trains has now captured 77 percent of the rail/air sector compared with 75 percent one year ago. Similarly on the London to Glasgow route despite slower schedules than air, Virgin Trains has seen its market share move from 9 percent to 11 percent. Just yesterday airline VLM will withdraw its Manchester - London City service joining the list of those air operators who have reduced their domestic services over the last few years as rail becomes the preferred public transport mode of choice for journeys of around 200 miles. With the pull out by VLM air services between Manchester and the Capital now total just 17 in both directions daily compared with Virgin Trains who are now operating over 90. Jun 1, 2009
