Paragould hopes to start $700,000 sidewalk project.(NE Journal: NORTHEAST ARKANSAS STAFF: A Look at News From Northeast Arkansas

The city of Paragould hopes to start a sidewalk overhaul project that could cost $700,000 during the next three to five years.

Some of the sidewalks "are so bad they look like they have been hit with a sledgehammer," said Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill.

He isn't sure how many feet of sidewalk will need to be replaced or what the total cost of the project will be. He said that still was being determined.

To repair the sidewalks, the city will use $250,000 annually from a fund that had been used on a drainage project that recently was completed, Gaskill said. Since 1997, about $1 million has been spent on new sidewalks, he said.
