Healthy eating and exercise are giving way to pressure from the economy, but the shoppers we hear from see themselves as more health conscious than ever. I was wondering about that as I walked alongside the International Bike Race that was held in Philadelphia on Sunday, June 7th. The shady side of the route was crowded with families camping out for a June Sunday of bike racing. Many had babies and toddlers, and looked like they would have rather been racing than watching. The bikers themselves looked almost as thin as jockeys. The fans looked like they wanted to look like the bikers, but almost half of them had bags of chips between their chairs or on their blankets, and soft drinks as well as waters in their coolers. Why weren't they munching on carrots instead of chips? I suspect that it's because salty snacks are one of life's pleasures that add to other pleasures including picnics. And the need for pleasure is right up there with the need for good nutrition.
