Visiting Tokyo, Shahristani on July 9 met with Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshihiro Nikai, who requested the Iraqi oil minister to give special consideration of stakes sought by Japanese firms at Nasseriya and other Iraqi oil and gas fields.
Nippon Oil, Japan's largest refiner, leads a consortium of Inpex and JGC Corp bidding for the EPC contract to develop Nasseriya, a 4 bn bls field in the southern province of Thi-Qar, which is to produce 300,000 b/d. The group is competing for this with ENI and Repsol/YPF.
Shahristani. invited to attend a Japan-Iraq investment seminar in Tokyo organised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), has asked the competitors to to revise their bid prices for Nasseriyah's development. The EPC contract is limited to the duration of the field's development and test production phase, based on engineering, procurement and construction works at a fixed turn-key price (see (down19IraqFieldsMay11-09 and gmt19IraqFieldsJun11-09).
