Yuskewich is an owner of the Winterset CPA Group in Columbus. During his inaugural speech, Yuskewich encouraged all members to get involved. "We need to be certain our voice is heard and our expertise as CPAs is utilized," Yuskewich stressed.

"The Ohio Society needs your involvement to achieve the goals that benefit all of us," he continued. "Join a committee. Get involved in your community. Share your ideas. Get plugged in."

Yuskewich led the enthusiastic applause as the Society recognized member military veterans and those with family members in military service. He also recognized OSCPA member volunteers for meeting a wide range of needs--from serving on Society committees and councils to participating in community outreach programs such as Accounting for Kids[TM] Day. "Volunteers are the lifeblood of this organization," Yuskewich said.

Installing officer Steven A. Haxton, CPA, president of Jacob Haxton & Boord LLC praised Yuskewich's leadership talents: "I've known Matt for many years and have always been impressed with his commitment and character. Now we will all benefit from his skills and leadership ability."

"I swear to keep the Society on solid ground and be a good steward of the resources of which I'm in charge," Yuskewich promised.

During the Annual Meeting, Peter A. Margaritis, CPA, president of Margaritis Financial Services in Columbus, was inducted as chair-elect. Jay J. Moeller, CPA, partner with Battelle & Battelle LLP in Dayton, will serve as past-chair. Brian D. Marita, CPA, partner with Ciuni & Panichi Inc. in Cleveland, was inducted as vice chair--finance.

HAZELBAKER AWARDED GOLD MEDAL

The Society presented its highest award, the Gold Medal for Meritorious Service to the Accounting Profession, to Thomas D. Hazelbaker, CPA, a shareholder with Clark Schaefer Hackett in Middletown. Hazelbaker was honored for his steadfast commitment to OSCPA through the legislative key-person program and numerous other committees. Upon receiving his award, Hazelbaker thanked the many people who have supported and shaped who he is today. He also admonished attendees to live a life of integrity. "We have a profound responsibility to the public by serving in this profession," Hazelbaker said.

PAST SUCCESSES AND FUTURE GOALS

The Annual Meeting also included a recap of the Society's financial performance for FY 2008-2009. Through aggressive cost management and innovative programming and marketing, OSCPA reported strong financial performance. For a financial overview, see the report on page 30.

Moeller and OSCPA President and CEO Clarke Price shared many of the Society's successes of the past year, including the steady growth of the Professional Issues Updates (PIUs). Offering four hours of free CPE with an engaging overview of the issues impacting the profession, the PIUs are one of the most popular member benefits.

The Society's Annual Meeting was the centerpiece of the Members Summit, which provided a full-day of CPE programs across multiple tracks. Changing accounting standards and the move to a single set of international standards continues to be a pressing issue. GAAP continues to change and become more compatible with International Financial Reporting Standards, creating a widespread impact on the CPA profession. Many more topics were covered during the Members Summit. Read more in the article "Surviving today's economy main topic of 2009 Members Summit."
