Element 112, which IUPAC recently confirmed would be added to the periodic table (C&I 2009, 12, 8), has been named. The researchers from the Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany, decided that the element should be called copernicium after the first astronomer to propose a comprehensive model of a heliocentric solar system.
