US healthcare major Johnson & Johnson and Irish neuroscience-based biotech firm Elan have signed an agreement whereby J&J will acquire all the assets and rights related to Elan's Alzheimer's disease immunotherapy programme through a new company, and will also invest $1bn in Elan in exchange for an 18.4% holding. J&J will commit up to $500m to continue, with Elan's partner Wyeth, the development and launch of bapineuzumab, which is currently being evaluated for slowing the progress of Alzheimer's disease. Elan will receive a 49.9% homing in the new JW company, with a similar share of any profits and future royalty payments.
