Craighead County still seeing sales tax slide.(NE Journal: A Look at News From Northeast Arkansas)

For the first time since at least 1999, Craighead County reported a fourth consecutive month of declining revenue from its 1 percent sales tax when compared with the same month in the previous year.

In June, the county collected $1.2 million, which was down 5.8 percent from June 2008, accordmg to numbers provided by the Craighead County Treasurer's office. And through the first six months of 2009, the tax is off 1.57 percent from the same period in 2008.

Craighead County Treasurer Russell Patton III said he wasn't sure what was causing the declines in collections, which reflect the amount collected at Craighead County's cash registers two months earlier.

"The only thing I can say is we're looking two months behind, so hopefully it's turned around and we haven't seen the results of it yet," he said.
