In a subtle but significant shift in consumer behavior, card issuer VISA revealed that the volume of debit card transactions exceeded credit card transactions for the first time in the month of May. A VISA spokesperson said that the shift to debit cards reflected growing consumer aversion to debt and a new sense of financial conservatism.
