Akers (criminology and sociology, U. of Florida) provides a detailed study of the work and theories of Edwin H. Sutherland (1883-1950), a noted sociologist and criminologist who developed a theory about how individuals learn to engage in criminal and deviant behavior. The author discusses the origins of Sutherland's theory and perspective, the intellectual history of the theory and social learning theory, and puts forward his new integrated theory of social learning and social structure that links group differences in crime to individual behavior. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of social learning theory in criminology and public policy. The book is a reprint of the original 1998 edition and includes a new introduction.
