BancorpSouth Inc. of Tupelo, Miss., said income was down 15.5 percent in the second quarter, but it still beat analyst estimates.
The banking company recorded net income of $33.9 million or 41 cents a share, compared with $40.1 million or 49 cents a share for the second quarter of 2008. Analysts had estimated earnings of 30 cents a share.
Total assets at June 30 declined to $13.3 billion from $13.4 billion at June 30, 2008. Total deposits of $10.2 billion increased 3.6 percent from $9.8 billion at June 30, 2008. Loans and leases, net of unearned income, increased 3.0 percent to $9.8 billion at June 30 from $9.5 billion at June 30, 2008.
