David Byrne is at the point in his career where he can do whatever he wants. And what he wants to do is ride his bike all over town, perform in a tutu, collaborate with Dirty Projectors and buy peanut butter at Gourmet Garage. Sounds good to us, good enough that we devoted this year's Icon issue to the New York legend himself. We were pleased that our readers responded in kind, sending us overwhelming praise for the issue, but mostly for Byrne and his many, many sides.
Dear FADER,
I had never heard of your magazine before spotting David Byrne on the cover a few days ago. I picked up a copy and have devoured it. Wonderful work! I remember the first time I saw Stop Making Sense--I was a huge Jonathan Demme fan, though I didn't know much of Talking Heads-and there was Byrne with the big suit, dancing with a lamp. It was more a performance than a concert, the way all good music should be delivered. The issue is a fitting tribute. Thanks.
Jessica
FADER,
Who knew David Byrne had style? The plaid pants on page 75 are killing it!

FADER folks,
I was pleasantly surprised to see that Ed Droste [of Grizzly Bear] listened to Graceland and Speaking in Tongues while carpooling growing up, because that's exactly the same thing my parents would listen to. Did he perhaps go to Jewish day school in Massachusetts? I swear I would have noticed such an angel-voiced boy in class with me, but maybe I was too busy transcribing the lyrics of "Naive Melody" into my notebook during pre-algebra to notice much of anything.
David
