Three years ago I saw the reunited Dinosaur Jr. destroy a tiny club in LA. It was packed with 200 J. Mascis clones who'd climbed down from the hills to sweat everywhere and be the most psyched dudes in the history of civilization. The band played "The Lung" and "Freak Scene." It was awesome. Thirty minutes prior to the show, I was standing on the corner in front of 7-Eleven, and out of the corner of my eye caught a glimpse of the biggest Big Gulp I'd ever seen. Attached to it was Mascis, wearing a bad trucker hat and a look of indifference so powerful it could quake the steel bowels of an indie rock asshole Voltron. I was sure that night would be it for these guys--Mascis, Barlow, Murph--one last tiny triumph before shuffling back to their separate lives. Instead they decided to record Beyond, an album that was okay but not in any way a fulfillment of the show's potential. Farm not only gets closer, but actually erases a lot of the intervening history since Bug was released 20 years ago. Just listen to "I Want You To Know," pretend you were born sometime between 1965 and 1980, that the internet is not even a word yet and that sometimes you really only want to hang out with weird dudes and talk about girls instead of to them.
