San Diego's long running pro golf tournament, the Buick Invitational held at the beginning of the year at Torrey Pines Golf Course, is seeking a new sponsor after General Motors and Buick severed ties with the Professional Golfers Association's Tour, according to an announcement Aug. 4.
The PGA Tour and the Century Club of San Diego, the local private group that organizes the event, said next year's tour, from Jan. 25 to 31, will go on as planned, and that they are in discussions with potential sponsors.
Buick was in its last year of its contract as sponsor for the 2010 event, but because of GM's bankruptcy, it was unable to continue that relationship, a spokesman said.
Buick had been the sponsor of the golf tournament for the past 18 years, but the event with other sponsors has been held in San Diego since 1952, and at Torrey Pines since 1968.
