Seventeen teams from universities across North America showcased innovative clean car technologies last month in Toronto, with the Minister of Natural Resources Lisa Raitt and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure John Baird crowning a team of engineering students from Ohio State University as the winners of the first phase of EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge competition.
"Our government is proud to support Canada's best and brightest students as they do their part to contribute to the cleaner and more efficient vehicles of tomorrow," said Minister Raitt. "The achievements recognized today in new, green vehicle technology are a key component to creating new jobs and economic opportunities while addressing today's environmental challenges."
Three Canadian teams from the University of Victoria, the University of Waterloo and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology participated in the competition, with the University of Victoria placing second in the competition.
The Government of Canada contributed $500,000 to the EcoCAR: The Next Challenge, which was also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors.
