Town centre rubbish cleared.

A TONNE-and-a-half of rubbish has been cleared from a Tyneside town centre.

The huge clear-up in Wallsend was part of a council and police initiative in North Tyneside. Three wagonloads of litter were removed from the area last week after six estate caretakers swept into action.

In addition to the litter pick, the council removed graffiti and issued a pounds 50 fixed-penalty notice to someone caught dropping rubbish.

Coun Ian Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "I'm pleased that, working with partners, we have responded to residents' concerns about anti-social behaviour and street cleanliness.

"The estate caretakers make a big contribution towards keeping the borough clean and tidy and proved that once again as part of this initiative."

The clear-up forms part of Operation Respect, which also targets antisocial behaviour. Wallsend Neighbourhood Sergeant Dave Guthrie said: "Operation Respect is an example of effective partnership working between residents, the police, and a local authority. "Together, we have acted on concerns about antisocial behaviour and litter, and we have seen positive results come out of this operation.

"Anyone who has any concerns about anti-social behaviour in their area should contact police on 03456 043 043."
