U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced that the Federal Railroad Administration has received 278 pre-applications for grant funding totaling USD 102 billion. The money will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail competitive grant program. US Air Transport Assn. took exception yesterday to a provision in the Senate FAA reauthorization bill introduced this week that would require airlines to return flights to gates when tarmac delays reach 3 hr. to allow passengers wishing to leave the aircraft to deplane. Jul 16, 2009

AirTran Airways will launch Baltimore service to Indianapolis (twice-daily) and New Orleans (daily) as well as Milwaukee service to Indianapolis (daily) and Pittsburgh (daily) Oct. 6 aboard 717s and will increase daily service to Denver (aboard 737s) to twice-daily. American Airlines Federal Credit Union (AA Credit Union) will celebrate the grand opening of its newest Miami International Airport Cargo branch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 23. Additional festivities and activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 24, at the newly-opened branch at the Cargo Building at 6150 NW 17th St., Suite 206, in Miami. Continental Airlines, Boeing

Information released by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) today reveals that a combination of weather, handling and possibly a broken steering cable could have been factors in the runway excursion of a Continental Boeing 737-500 at the Denver International Airport the night of 20 December. Continental Flight 1404 was taking off from Denver at 1818h local time that night when pilots lost directional control as the aircraft accelerated through approximately 90kt (166km/h) airspeed. The aircraft departed the left side of Runway 34R, coming to rest in a drainage basin and catching on fire. All 115 passengers and crewmembers escaped, though 41 were injured. Jul 17, 2009

FlyersRights.org

FlyersRights.org has praised the Senate Commerce Committee version of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2009 which includes important Airline PassengersO Bill of Rights provisions. It says that passengers will have the right to return to the terminal after three-hours on the tarmac if the pilot determines this can be done safely. It also says that while on the tarmac, airlines will be required to provide food, potable water, working restrooms and reasonable cabin temperature and ventilation. Heathrow and Gatwick Express have launched the first ever environmentally friendly door-to-door service to and from the airport with Carbon Voyage. Travellers can book a pick up from either their home or office in a Carbon Voyage car and travel to Paddington or Victoria Stations where they will board the express train service to Heathrow or Gatwick Airports. Pet Airways

Pet Airways, a pets-only airline operated by Omaha-based Suburban Air Freight, operated its inaugural flight Tuesday on a New York Republic-Baltimore-Chicago Midway routing with 35-40 pets onboard. The airline's Beech 1900 has had the seats and overhead bins removed, leaving space for pet carriers in the main cabin. It also will serve Denver Rocky Mountain and Los Angeles Hawthorne. Sensis

Sensis said its Low Cost Ground Surveillance was selected for evaluation by US FAA as part of the agency's LCGS Pilot Program aimed at reducing runway incursions at small- and medium-size airports. Sensis will be deploying its initial system at Long Beach. Jul 15, 2009

Southwest Airlines, Boeing

US National Transportation Safety Board said "no significant corrosion or obvious pre-existing mechanical damage" was found on the Southwest Airlines 737-300 that developed a hole in its fuselage Monday while flying from Nashville to Baltimore. SWA is repairing the aircraft in Charleston, W.Va., where it landed following a "rapid decompression." NTSB said the hole measured approximately 17 in. by 8 in. and that its investigation will continue. Southwest said yesterday it had inspected its more than 180 Boeing 737-300s following the incident and found no similar structural problems. Jul 15, 2009

United Airlines

United Airlines is conducting an internal investigation after one of its captains diverted a flight to deplane a senior flight attendant who he argued with. Flight 842 from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Chicago O'Hare diverted to Miami early in the morning of 14 July midway through the scheduled non-stop flight of nearly eleven hours. A source familiar with the incident says the captain ordered the purser of the Boeing 767 to leave the aircraft because he or she was "not respecting his authority". Jul 16, 2009

WestJet, Air France KLM

WestJet and Air France KLM launched their interline partnership, allowing AF KLM passengers to connect to Calgary-Vancouver WS flights as well as flights from both cities to Edmonton. In February the airlines said they had signed an MOU signaling their intention to codeshare by late 2009 or early 2010 . WS, which long has sought to expand its international reach via interline partnerships, also has an agreement to cooperate with Southwest Airlines but implementation has been postponed. WestJet Executive VP-Commercial Distribution Hugh Dunleavy said the interline services made available yesterday are just the "first step in our strategic partnership" with AF KLM, adding, "Starting with only three Canadian cities allows us to take a measured and thoughtful approach to implementation, with the intent to expand this travel to our entire Canadian network."
