WORK on the final phase of a pounds 7m modernisation project at Sunderland Metro station will start today. Nexus is investing in the Network Rail-owned station as the major operator using it.
The 140-metre long platforms will be given new wall coverings, floors and ceilings to give the building a striking new image. Improved lighting, passenger information and waiting areas are also major elements of the project.
The station will remain open during the work, due to last nine months.
Bernard Garner, director general of Nexus, said: "We hope passengers will understand minor inconvenience for nine months is a small price to pay for the improvements."
