Helping out is neigh bother! CHILDREN RAISE pounds 1,000 FOR DISABLED RIDING SCHOOL.

Byline: AMY HUNT

GENEROUS pupils who raised cash for charity got to see how their money was put to good use.

Students from the Junior House at Westfield Independent Day School in Gosforth, Newcastle, raised more than pounds 1,000 on a fundraising day.

The cash was donated to the Newcastle and District Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) stables in Westerhope, and girls from Year Six were invited to see how it was being used.

Newcastle and District RDA provides horse riding lessons for disabled children.

The girls were given the opportunity to take part in a riding lesson at the Westerhope stables and to meet children who are benefiting from their fundraising.

The Junior House raised the money during a charity day at the school called Thunderous Thursday.

During the charity day, girls from the school put into practice one of the school's study themes of Europe, by paying to dress in costumes representing an aspect or person associated with a country in Europe, as well as hosting a bring and buy sale.

The girls also had a talk by Avril Lomas, a volunteer for the RDA.

Avril said: "We are extremely grateful to the girls of Westfield Junior House for their most generous fundraising of over pounds 1,000.

"The Year Six girls helped at a session for three visuallyimpaired children and experienced first-hand how the charity provides an enjoyable activity for the children, giving them confidence, independence and self-esteem." Over the years the girls at Westfield have raised thousands of pounds on 'Thunderous Thursdays' for UNICEF, The Rainbow Trust, Percy Hedley School and the WWF.

Margot Branson, head of the Junior House at Westfield, said: "It's great to be able to give something back, especially to such a dedicated charity right on our doorstep."
