OLD-FASHIONED lightbulbs are disappearing from our shelves today. By law, stores all over Europe must start phasing out old-fashioned bulbs from today and customers will have no choice about whether to use low-energy ones.
Stocks of the old bulbs are expected to run out by the end of September. The ban on traditional bulbs has not gone down well everywhere.
In some countries, particularly Germany, Austria and Hungary, householders have been stockpiling old-style bulbs to use after the phase-out.
But Government environment chiefs and energy experts say the law is important to cut the UK's energy bills and protect the environment.
