Holiday revel; THOUSANDS TURN OUT TO JOIN IN A WEEKEND OF FUN.

Byline: LAURA CAROE

REVELLERS across the North East enjoyed a bumper weekend of bank holiday fun.

The sun shone for at least some of the time and the weekend's attractions featured everything from a scarecrow show to athletics.

Thousands of sports fans travelled to Gateshead International Stadium for the Aviva British Grand Prix, despite the rain. More than 30 medallists including Jessica Ennis and teammate Phillips Idowu snatched gold in the heptathlon and the triple jump in the IAAF World Championships.

Meanwhile, families flocked to look at scarecrows, made by residents in Rennington, near Alnwick, Northumberland, for the annual event.

The humorous scarecrows were placed throughout the village for visitors to admire. The event was topped by the Scarecrow Ball later in the evening.

At Wallington Hall, Northumberland, youngsters came together for a teddy bears picnic.

There was a trail for the children to follow, which showed different bears through the ages from Winnie the Pooh to the Muppets, as well as story-telling, a craft workshop and a best dressed bear competition with 60 entrants.

And scores of people pulled on their trainers to take part in the Pride Dog Walk, in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle, yesterday, before having a picnic near the waterfall.
