A FACELIFT for a Tyneside bus station has begun.
Operator Nexus is spending pounds 130,000 on Wallsend bus station, with new shelters, improved lighting, extra CCTV and changes to the road layout to improve circulation.
Work has already begun on the project which will be completed over the next two months at the bus station beside Wallsend Metro.
The work forms part of the Nexus Bus Strategy, a three-year action plan to improve bus services across Tyne and Wear.
It follows a similar pounds 100,000 facelift for Blaydon bus station in Gateshead completed this summer. South Shields bus station is also in line for improvement work.
The work at Wallsend will see three new CCTV cameras installed alongside those already sited at the bus and Metro stations.
New bus shelters with energy-efficient LED lighting will replace the existing shelters, along with new fencing along kerbs. The central traffic island will also be removed to make it easier for buses using the station.
