POLICE have teamed up with a council to advise residents in sheltered accommodation on how to keep safe from bogus callers.
Officers and representatives of North Tyneside Council want to remind the elderly to remember to take extra care when answering their door to someone they don''t know.
Sergeant Dave Guthrie, of Wallsend Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We want to reinforce the message to always make sure they only let people they know into their home.
"If they get a caller claiming to be from an organisation, always ask for personal identification, and check it carefully before you let them in.
"Genuine callers from the council, utilities and others don't mind if you check their ID and make a phone call first, to be sure they are who they claim to be."
This scheme is giving away free voice memo alarms to tenants in 1,000 properties.
The alarms, which are currently being installed across North Tyneside, sense when the householder walks to their door and gives tenants a timely reminder to check the caller's credentials.
