Aria Air Il-62 originating in Tehran crashed on landing at Mashhad Friday, killing at least 16 including the carrier's managing director, in the second fatal crash in Iran in fewer than 10 days. Mehdi Dadpey, who was one of Aria's founders in 1999, headed the Iranian airline and also served as a flight captain including on Friday's doomed Flight 1525. The carrier was grounded by Iranian authorities following the crash. Jul 27, 2009

Aria Airlines Il-62 that crashed in Mashhad on July 24, killing 16, was attempting to land too fast, Iranian Civil Aviation Organization Director Mohammad Ali Ilkhani told state television. "This plane should have landed at a maximum speed of 165 miles per hr. but it in fact landed at around 200 miles per hr.," he was quoted as saying by Agence France Presse. Deputy Transport Minister Ahmad Majidi told the ISNA news agency that "instead of landing at the beginning of the tarmac, the plane landed in the middle of the runway. Because the tarmac's length is short, it went off the tarmac and crashed into the opposite wall." Aria's operating license has been revoked. Jul 30, 2009

Emirates Airlines
Emirates is to be the first airline to install Honeywell's new landing aid, designed to prevent runway overruns by warning pilots that an approach is unsafe while the aircraft still has time to go around. The SmartLanding system is a software upgrade to the enhanced ground-proximity warning system (EGPWS) that can provide warnings of an unstable approach, predicted long landing, inappropriate aircraft configuration, or incorrect altimeter setting. Emirates will operate one of its two daily Dubai-Birmingham flights with an A380 on Sept. 9 to celebrate Birmingham International's 70th anniversary. MyAir
Italy's civil aviation authority grounded low cost airline MyAir on Wednesday, saying months of financial troubles made the company's service unreliable. The Italian authority, know by the acronym ENAC, said it suspended MyAir's license to fly effective at midnight Friday. The airline based in Vicenza, northern Italy, flew from Italian cities to airports across Europe, as well as Morocco and Turkey. Jul 24, 2009
Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways today (July 27) announced a major expansion of services to Europe. The Doha-based carrier said it planned a 40 percent rise in frequency to Spain, Greece, Sweden and France. It said it was increasing the number of weekly flights between Doha and Paris from 11 to 14, making it a twice daily service, from October 25. Services to Madrid will be increased from four a week to daily from December 2. The service, launched four years ago, is the only one between the Gulf and Spain. The Athens service will also be increased, rising from a current daily flight to two a day by March 2010. Stockholm will see its frequency increased from three to four a week from October 25. Qatar Airways will begin offering in-flight mobile communication services in October as part of a unique new programme with OnAir which gives the carrier the flexibility to turn off all or parts of the system during certain periods of the flight. Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker says the first aircraft to be equipped with the Mobile OnAir system, an Airbus A320, will be placed into service in October and Qatar's entire fleet should be equipped by 2014. He says passengers will be able to speak on their mobile phones as well as access emails and the Internet, but not at all times. Jul 24, 2009

Middle East charter and management company Rizon is to centre its Gulf operations at its new Qatari headquarters where it is building a new 11,150m2 (120,000ft2) hangar and fixed-base operation at the Emirates' Doha International Airport, scheduled to open in March 2010. Safi Airways Chairman Abdul Rahim Safi said the Afghan airline "has progressed so quickly in the past four months" that it will "undergo a major renewal of its fleet with either Boeing or Airbus aircraft," according to the airline. It currently flies two 737-300s and one 767-200ER. It plans to use new aircraft to serve Jeddah, Beijing and Moscow within the next six months. Jul 29, 2009

Virgin Galactic
Aabar Investments said Tuesday it will take a 32-percent stake worth USD$280 million in Virgin Group's space unit Virgin Galactic. In a filing on the Abu Dhabi bourse website, the investment firm said the deal was still subject to US and other regulatory approvals, but said it had committed an additional USD$100 million to fund a satellite launch capability. Aabar, an investment vehicle of the Abu Dhabi government, plans to build a spaceport in the United Arab Emirates capital. The deal gives it regional rights to host Virgin Galactic tourism and scientific research space flights, it said. Jul 29, 2009
