Aero-Instruments, Airbus

Ohio-based Aero-Instruments has received US FAA parts manufacturer approval (PMA) to market retrofit pitot probes for a large variety of Airbus aircraft, giving operators another provider to choose from along with Thales and Goodrich for the devices. Aug 5, 2009

Aero-Instruments, Airbus, Thales

Aero-Instruments said yesterday that it secured FAA Parts Manufacturer Approval for its 0851HL-AI Pitot Probe, which it claimed can replace Thales pitot probes on Airbus aircraft. Airbus last week told airlines that Thales pitot probes should be replaced with Goodrich models on all A330s/A340s as a "precautionary measure" and EASA said it will issue a similar order shortly. The recommendations come after weeks of concern regarding Thales probes following the May 31 Air France Flight 447 crash. Cleveland-based Aero-Instruments appears to be pushing an alternative to the Goodrich pitot probes for the likely replacements driven by Airbus and EASA. The company said its speed sensors "can now be installed" on A320 family aircraft, A330s and A340s. Aug 5, 2009

Air France, Airbus

Airbus is to assist with the funding of the deep-sea search effort for the flight recorders from the crashed Air France A330-200. The twinjet was lost two months ago en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, but attempts to trace the cockpit voice and flight data recorders have been unsuccessful. Following the 1 June loss a search programme, "Phase 1A", was initiated to retrieve debris and detect the recorders' sonic locator transmitters. Aug 4, 2009

Airbus, Thales

European safety regulators are to mandate the replacement of Thales pitot tubes on Airbus A330/A340s. The airworthiness directive will require aircraft fitted with Thales probes to replace at least two of the three with units manufactured by Goodrich. A proposal is expected to be issued by mid-August. Thales' older type "AA" probes would no longer be fitted. Aircraft retaining a single Thales probe would have the "BA" type installed. Aug 4, 2009

Continental Airlines

The captain of a Continental Airlines flight from Brussels to Newark Liberty International Airport died during flight this morning, according to an FAA official. Continental Airlines Flight 61 is expected to make an emergency landing at about noon in Newark, the flight's planned destination, according to Arlene Salac, an FAA spokeswoman. The jet left Brussels at 9:45 a.m. Continental Airlines planes sit at the terminal at Newark Liberty Airport in a file photo. Salac said the two first officers on the Boeing 777 are currently piloting the plane with 247 passengers on board, and no mechanical problems have been reported. The flight has been given priority to land at Newark and will pull into Terminal C, Salac said. Aug 6, 2009

Sukhoi Aircraft

SuperJet International received EASA Part 147 certification from the Italian Aeronautical Civil Authority authorizing it to develop training courses for the first customers of the Sukhoi Superjet 100. Certification also enables SuperJet to conduct training specifically for aeronautical engineers responsible for maintenance and release to service of the aircraft. Aug 6, 2009

Vueling Airlines

A flight operated by Spanish airline Vueling was delayed in Athens Thursday after the airport received a hoax warning that a bomb was on board, the low-cost carrier said. The Barcelona-bound plane was rescheduled to take off at 2100 GMT, nearly eight hours after Athens airport authorities halted take-off procedures for the flight after realising they had a written bomb warning, Vueling said in a statement. The hoax followed an incident on a Vueling flight on Wednesday when eight people were injured during an emergency evacuation from an aircraft after one of its engines caught fire on the ground in Paris. Vueling Airlines

Vueling Airlines A320 "experienced a small fire" in its right engine yesterday morning while being pushed back from Paris Orly's Terminal South, triggering an emergency evacuation. Flight VY9127 was bound for Alicante and had 165 passengers onboard. All passengers and crew were evacuated although eight suffered minor injuries, the LCC said in a statement. Aug 6, 2009

Vueling Airlines

Eight people aboard a jet operated by Spanish airline Vueling were slightly hurt on Wednesday when one of its engines caught fire before it was due to take off from Paris Orly airport, the airline said. The plane was evacuated after the fire began on the Airbus A320's right engine at 10.36 am (0836 GMT), as it taxied from the terminal, Vueling said in a communique. It did not specify whether those hurt were passengers or crew. A replacement aircraft was due to continue the flight to Alicante in Spain, it said. Aug 5, 2009
