TSA is about to require airline passengers to provide even more personal information when booking flights. The second phase of the Transportation Security Administration, or TSAOs, Secure Flight Program will begin Aug. 15 and will require travelers to give their date of birth and gender when purchasing tickets. The first phase began in May after most airlines began requesting a passengerOs name as it appears on government identification. Aug 12, 2009

Adaptive Flight

Adaptive Flight's Hornet Micro helicopter unmanned air vehicle was to fly yesterday at Webster Field, Maryland. The rotorcraft is designed to perform close-range reconnaissance and surveillance missions. With a mass of 2.4lb, the Hornet has a 20min-plus endurance using an electric motor to power its 28in-diameter rotor for a cruise speed of 30kt at an operating altitude of 3,500ft. With an automatic take-off and landing capability the Hornet will fly pre-programmed waypoints. Aug 10, 2009

Amazon River

As reported earlier, armed bandits attacked the Amazon River cruise ship they had boarded previously. Aqua Expeditions has released a statement regarding these attacks and their reponse. The statement is included below in its entirety. August 6, 2009 While cruising on the Amazon early Tuesday morning, August 4, the m/v Aqua was boarded by six unknown persons who robbed the passengers of valuables. Neither passengers nor crew were harmed. A similar incident occurred on July 26. CEO of Aqua Expeditions Francesco Galli Zugaro has been meeting this week with senior government officials, including the Minister of Tourism, Head of Police, and Department of Defense, all of whom have pledged to take all necessary actions to guarantee the safety of the Peruvian tourism industry and visitors to the country. Continental Airlines, San Diego

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Continental Airlines announced an expansion of the Paperless Boarding Pass pilot program at San Diego International Airport. The program will allow passengers to receive boarding passes electronically on their cell phones or PDAs, which will then be scanned by TSA security officers at the checkpoint and eliminate the need for a paper boarding pass. OThe deployment of the paperless technology signifies TSA's ongoing commitment to develop and implement new technologies while enhancing security,O said Mike Aguilar, TSA Federal Security Director for San Diego. OWe are pleased to be able to partner with Continental Airlines to expand this program that will help our officers validate authentic boarding documents.O Aug 13, 2009

Honduras

Following a drop in visitors due to recent political events involving former president Manuel Zelaya, along with the economic downturn worldwide, tourists from North America are now returning to the beaches of Honduras' northern coast and its Bay Islands. On the resort island of Roatan, business leaders led by Roatan Life are launching an innovative program called "Vacation for Roatan" aimed at introducing vacationers to the community while supporting local humanitarian causes such as the Clinica Esperanza, Sol Foundation, and Roatan Marine Park. Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum says a Russian visitor hurled an empty terra cotta mug at the Mona Lisa. A museum spokesman says the canvas of the Da Vinci masterpiece was undamaged in the attack last week, though the mug shattered. He said Tuesday small cracks appeared in the glass protecting the museum's most popular possession, but they will soon be fixed. The painting's security alarms went off immediately and police whisked the woman away, while viewing of the painting continued as usual. The spokesman is not authorized to be named according to museum policy. Aug 10, 2009

Mauritius

Mauritanian capital Nouakchott witnessed a suicide bomb explosion on Saturday evening, the first of its kind in the country, highlighting that the northwestern African country is facing serious challenges in fighting terrorism. A suicide attacker, identified as a Mauritanian man, detonated a bomb near the French embassy in Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, killing himself and wounding three other people. The bomb, apparently targeting the French embassy again, exploded at a location just about 100 meters from the embassy, injuring two guards from the French embassy and a local woman. Aug 10, 2009
