Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and other major U.S. carriers raised fares $20 round trip on most domestic routes in the first increase of that size this year, according to FareCompare.com. The higher prices, initiated separately on June 10 by Delta and US Airways Group Inc., gradually were matched by other U.S. carriers, including Southwest, Rick Seaney, chief executive officer of the ticket research firm, said Wednesday in an e-mail. Airlines have been slashing prices in an effort to persuade consumers to fly during the recession. Those fare reductions, a drop in business travel and rising jet-fuel prices will push U.S. carriers to a combined $1 billion in losses this year, according to the International Air Transport Association. Air Canada
Air Canada announced that it will allow passengers to bring their cat or small dog in the cabin on flights operated by Air Canada and Jazz beginning in July. Effective July 1, 2009, Air Canada will accept a limited number of small dogs and cats as a carry-on item that can be stowed under the seat. To ensure availability customers are asked to register their pet by contacting Air Canada Reservations at 1-888-247-2262 within 24 hours of completing their booking. Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines said it has taken steps to ensure that proper procedures are followed after two unaccompanied girls were placed on wrong Continental Express flights over the weekend. An 8-year-old College Station girl erroneously ended up in Fayetteville, Ark., and a 10-year-old Massachusetts girl was mistakenly sent to Newark, N.J., after boarding planes operated by ExpressJet, which is under contract with Continental. Continental Airlines
A pilot on a Continental Airlines flight died in mid-flight and the plane landed safely near New York City under the control of two co-pilots, authorities said on Thursday. Continental flight 61 from Brussels landed at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to Continental's website. "The captain of Continental flight 61, which was en route from Brussels to Newark, died in flight, apparently of natural causes," Continental said in a statement. "The crew on this flight included an additional relief pilot who took the place of the deceased pilot. The flight continued safely with two pilots at the controls," it said. The plane was a Boeing 777 with 247 passengers on board. The pilot, 60, was based in Newark and had worked for Continental for 32 years, the airline said. Continental has one flight daily between Brussels and Newark. Continental Airlines shares were down more than 5 percent outpacing declines in the airlines index. Jun 19, 2009

A Continental Airlines captain died today while at the controls of a Boeing 777 over the Atlantic Ocean. Continental says in a statement the 60-year old captain died while en route from Brussels to Newark. The carrier says because this flight had a flight crew of three pilots the relief pilot was able to take the place of the deceased pilot. Jun 18, 2009

Jonathan Kamens said he put his daughter, Miriam, on a Cleveland-bound Continental Airlines flight at Logan Airport in Boston on Sunday to visit her grandparents. He told WBZ-TV that shortly after the plane landed in Ohio, his father-in-law called saying she had not arrived. Kamens said for 45 minutes no one could tell him where his daughter was. She was finally located unharmed in Newark. Kamens said the number of people who failed to do their jobs is "mindboggling." Delta Air Lines said it planned to make a further 10 percent cut in capacity as the recession and rising oil prices continued to bite. The cuts include a further 5 percent drop in transatlantic capacity and the suspension of three routes to Europe. Gulfstream International Airlines
Gulfstream International Airlines said it has filed a detailed response to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) findings from a 2008 inspection and proposed civil penalty. The company provided documentation that it believes shows that it was in compliance with the relevant regulations in substantially all of the findings by the FAA and, thus, asserts there were no violations in those cases. Porter Airlines
Porter Airlines is adding Boston to its growing list of destinations as part of its fall schedule. Service between Toronto City Centre Airport (TCCA) and Boston Logan International Airport begins Sept. 14, with up to three daily non-stop roundtrips. US Airways
US Airways will begin nonstop service between its largest hub in Charlotte, N.C., and Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu on Dec. 17. New US regulations stemming from the fatal Valujet Airlines crash in 1996 come into force in four months' time, and have driven diversified US company Pacific Scientific to develop a new product for transporting oxygen bottles and generators. Department of Transportation regulation HM224B, mandating greatly improved protection for such devices, was approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration in 2007 for airlines with a two-year compliance period.
