WHITLEY Tomahawks finished a creditable fourth in the Sheffield Scimitars Academy Under-16 Tournament. The Tomahawks began the competition with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Basingstoke.
New signing Daniel Spedding then bagged a brace and Ben Richards one goal in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Greyhounds.
North Ayrshire Predators held Whitley to a 1-1 draw, Spedding netting the equaliser with five minutes left to clinch a semi-final berth.
Before that, the Tomahawks had to first beat previouslyundefeated Telford Rockets.
This they did 4-0 with Richards, Christian Johnson, Spedding and Andrew Cook notching the goals.
Whitley next faced Sutton Sting from the other group in a crossover game due to them being in only a five-team group - and maintained their good form with an 11-6 success.
Spedding (2), Callum Clark (2), Richards and Johnson were on the scoresheet.
Telford had to defeat North Ayr to take their semi-final place and top the group.
This they managed to do after a 3-2 victory, meaning Whitley were in the semi-finals.
They were up against Sheffield Rapiers and played well - but lacked any luck as they missed three penalty shots.
Sheffield took the lead after 12 minutes and added the second after Tomahawks had pulled their netminder in the final 30 seconds.
Chelmsford made a flying start in the third/fourth place play-off when they went ahead after just 12 seconds.
Another strike came eight minutes later before two converted penalty shots saw Chelmsford home 4-0.
