Walker spreads the word.

A KEEN walker has completed a 300-mile challenge.

Tyneside man Ged Lynn set off from St Paul's Church in Jarrow more than three weeks ago on his march to Guildford Cathedral in Surrey. The local historian was retracing the route taken by the Jarrow Marchers to promote a bid to turn the Jarrow site and St Peter's Church in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland into a World Heritage Site.

On his walk, Ged, 37, has raised the profile of the region by handing out thousands of flyers and chatting with people he has met.

He set out on August 9 and crossed the finish line yesterday. He said: "It has been a brilliant walk and the first 250 miles were a breeze.

"I had originally planned to collect signatures for a petition, but that proved impossible as people just didn't seem keen on being stopped in the street and asked to sign something.

"I did hand out around 2,000 information leaflets discussing the World Heritage Site bid and I have spoken with hundreds of people."

Ged, who lives in Jarrow, South Tyneside, says he is now planning another long distance walk, but it is too early to decide on a route.
