PEOPLE across the region will have the chance to have their say about caring for older and disabled people.
The Big Care Debate comes to Newcastle this Friday, as new figures show people in the North East are in for a shock when it comes to preparing for care costs.
According to research by the Department of Health, when asked to estimate how much care and support might cost, 30% of people in Newcastle believed the Government would cover their needs at home.
Nearly a third of those who did expect to pay thought access to care and support at home would cost between pounds 5,000 and pounds 10,000, yet the reality is very different.
More than 50% of over 65-year-olds will need care costing at least pounds 25,000 and 20% will need more than pounds 50,000 for their care.
The 2,895 people in Newcastle with dementia could face costs of up to pounds 200,000.
Government proposals include creating a new National Care Service which would ensure that everyone would get some care paid for.
To take part in the debate, go down to the Big Care Debate Roadshow on Northumberland Street on Friday, September 4.
