ALLEGIANCE TELECOM DEPLOYS FIRST HDSL2 CIRCUIT.

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) and Allegiance Telecom, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGX) have announced the deployment of the first HDSL2 circuit in the industry. Using ADTRAN's HDSL2 products, Allegiance is the first competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) to deploy 1.544 Mbps T1 service over a single copper pair using the new HDSL2 technology. Based on the upcoming HDSL2 standard, this technology allows service providers to deploy high-speed DSL service over a single copper pair.

"Allegiance is dedicated to using the latest technological advancements to meet our customer demand for higher speed networking solutions," said John Pena, vice president of engineering for Allegiance Telecom.

HDSL2 is a standards-based technology that supports full 1.544 Mbps T1 service deployment over a single pair of copper wires. HDSL2 will offer carriers complete product interoperability with other HDSL2 equipment and spectral compatibility with other telecom service offerings. The HDSL2 standard, being developed by an ANSI T1E1 committee, is expected to be fully ratified by the end of this year. HDSL2 deployment has the potential to constitute more than 50% of the projected $500 million HDSL market by 2000, according to industry analysts.

"Through our involvement in the ANSI committee, ADTRAN is working hard to help define the HDSL2 standard. Those efforts now come to fruition as ADTRAN and Allegiance provide a real world application that we anticipate as being very close to the final standard," said Tom Stanton, vice president and general manager of the ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. "ADTRAN is pleased to partner with Allegiance, a company that mirrors our philosophy of providing flexible networking solutions with a major emphasis on customer service."

All ADTRAN HDSL2 solutions are based on the latest parameters of the ANSI HDSL2 Standard. ADTRAN's broadband Carrier Class integrated access device - the Total Access(TM) 3000 system was selected by Allegiance to deploy the first HDSL2 circuit, and will be utilized in specific markets as their HDSL2 deployment platform.

From its compact chassis, the Total Access 3000 platform offers modular design, flexible management options, extensive service level protection and the necessary connections to interface with up to 224 subscribers. While capable of multiservice deployment, this flexible system also allows more cost-effective delivery of a single service when compared to traditional single-purpose devices.
