Netopia, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTPA), Alameda, Calif., a market leader in providing Internet and electronic commerce infrastructure to small and medium-sized businesses, has introduced the new Netopia R7200 SDSL Router.
The Netopia R7200 is a business-class DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) router that will enable Netopia to target national and international customers whose DSL carriers employ the ATM/DSL D50 Speedlink System (D50e in ETSI markets) from Nokia (NYSE:NOK).
Because it is based on Netopia's unique R-series router architecture, the R7200 is distinguished in the DSL marketplace by its built-in security, dial backup and management tools, which deliver value and reliability to the small business end user. Netopia also announced today that its R3100-I IDSL Router too is now interoperable with the Nokia D50 Speedlink System and the D50e.
The Netopia R7200 and R3100-I incorporate an industry-leading feature set that makes them a very attractive solution both for small and medium sized businesses and for the ISPs, CLECs and VARs that provision them. Features include the following:
-- A built-in firewall that uses packet filtering and network address translation to protect a company's network resources. This enhanced security is especially important to DSL customers, as DSL connections are "always on."
-- A built-in 8-port hub, which means that small businesses can use the R7200 or R3100-I to set up their network as well as to connect their network to the Internet.
-- Analog or ISDN dial back-up, which ensures that small business DSL customers not only have redundant access to the Internet but redundant access to local servers from the Internet.
-- A uniquely extensible modular architecture which allows the router to be expanded with a number of add-on kits and upgraded to new WAN technologies as they become available.
-- Sophisticated diagnostic tools such as Ping, Trace Route, Syslog and Telnet client. These tools are especially useful to ISPs and CLECs, as they allow for faster problem-solving and thus optimize customer service.
-- Sophisticated management and monitoring tools such as SNMP, Telnet and out-of-band management, which mean that all management of the router can be performed remotely by the customer's ISP or CLEC.
In a firmware release (currently in public beta and available for download) scheduled for October '99, the R7200 and R3100-I will also offer the following features:
-- Secure VPN, which lets businesses easily set up extranets for partners and vendors, securely connect branch offices, and provide secure LAN access to remote and mobile workers. Netopia's VPN implementation allows its R-series routers to initiate secure tunnels (as a PPTP Access Concentrator, or "PAC"), terminate secure tunnels (as a PPTP Network Server or "PNS"), or provide NAT pass-through for PPTP connections. This means that small businesses can implement a business class VPN solution using just a Netopia router and the client software built into the Windows operating system. No NT Server or external VPN equipment is needed.
-- MultiNAT, a sophisticated NAT extension that provides the security of a NAT "wall" to hide LAN IP addresses, while providing flexibility in the use of multiple IP addresses offered by an ISP.
"Like all Netopia routers, the R7200 and R3100-I are designed not only to provide reliable, high speed Internet access, but also to offer the end user a set of value-added features that allows them to use their high speed connections to conduct more and more business online," said Alan Lefkof, president and CEO of Netopia, Inc. "We look forward to making the unique advantages of our routers available to customers whose DSL service is based on Nokia central office equipment."
Pricing and Availability:
The Netopia R7200 SDSL and R3100-I IDSL Routers are available immediately at list price of $599 and $499 respectively.
