Job Attribute Definitions

The 32 jobs will be described in terms of the following six attributes:

City Size: This will be either large or small. For some people large may be New York City and small Dallas, while for others a large/small combination may be Dallas/Tyler, and so on. Personalize the city size distinction to meet your concept of large and small.

Compensation Package: Compensation will be described relative to the average market value for entry-level accountants. This figure includes salary, bonus, benefits (health, retirement, etc.), and other factors that have an identifiable dollar value.

Firm Type: This attribute will be either a public accounting firm (e.g., Big Six, regional firms, local firms) or a private-sector (nonpublic accounting) organization, which includes all other accounting job opportunities.

Flex-Time Option: Flexible time is descriptive here. Your hours are set by you within certain limits. This is in contrast to a situation where your hours are inflexible, particularly in regard to the starting time.

Opportunities for Advancement/Job Stability: This attribute will be either a high opportunity to advance with the trade-off of low job stability, or low opportunity to advance with a trade-off of high job stability. Which is more important: advancement or stability (security)?

Work Environment: This attribute relates to the day-to-day surrounding of the job: your interactions with co-workers, the physical location of the office, the surroundings inside the office itself, access to supplies and equipment needed to do the job, and so on.
