Honda Motor Co. unveiled a plan to revamp its European model lineup, adding diesel-powered cars it currently lacks. Honda's plan calls for introducing a diesel version of the Civic car and a highly fuel-efficient 1.3-liter gasoline-engine mini-car early next year. In 2003, under the plan, the No. 2 Japanese auto maker will launch a diesel version of the Accord family car.
Honda will procure 1.7-liter diesel engines for the Civic from the Polish plant operated by Japan's Isuzu Motors Ltd. It will use its own, recently developed 2-liter-class diesel engine for the Accord. The moves will address a gap in Honda's product offerings in Europe, where diesel-powered vehicles now account for 30 percent of the market. Currently, Honda sells no vehicles with diesel-engine options.
