Mexican car-parts manufacturers will narrowly boost production above year 2000 levels this year according to the Industria Nacional de Autopartes (INA), the Mexican auto parts manufacturers association. Record sales of $13.5 billion (exports of $10.8 billion) in 2000 were 14 percent up over 1999 and while sales thus far in 2001 are higher than the level recorded in 2000, the U.S. economic slowdown will affect the industry ever harder resulting only in an expected 0.02 percent improvement, INA said.
Sales are up thus far due to an 11 percent increase in Mexican demand for vehicles and a 3.5 percent increase in the national industry's exports. Of total car-parts production in 2001, 71 percent is for the local market. There are 500 auto parts company groups in Mexico.
