French auto group PSA Peugeot Citroen has signed two 5-year framework agreements with CNRS (national center for scientific research) and CEA (atomic energy commission), which will allow it to intensify its research into battery-driven cars. PSA invested $42.7 million in this area between 1998 and 2000 and has developed two prototype cars, the Taxi PAC and Hydro-GEN.
According to the manufacturer, the costs of the car will have to be divided by five before it will be commercially viable. Batteries will not be the main source of energy for cars until 2010 or 2020.
