Nissan Motor Co. said it plans to produce passenger cars in China through a joint venture as early as next year, a major Japanese newspaper. Nissan is in final talks with China's Dong Feng Automobile Co. to produce small compacts based on Nissan's "March" model, the Asahi newspaper reported.
Nissan did not comment on the report. Nissan President Carlos Ghosn said last month that the automaker is talking with potential Chinese partners to enter the country's auto market and that a decision would be made soon.
Japanese automakers recently suspended exports to China after Beijing last month slapped tariffs of 100 percent on imported Japanese vehicles. The higher duties were retaliation for tariffs imposed temporarily by Japan on Chinese agricultural products in April.
