MEXICO CITY -- Thousands of poor farmers took to the streets this week to protest government agricultural and trade policies. Many blame improved US relations for a worsening of conditions in the agricultural sector. Corn farmers say US imports have increasingly put pressure on Mexican producers and lowered domestic corn prices. Representatives of the sector also say President Vicente Fox has not followed through on promises to make more money available to modernize the agriculture sector. The protests were the latest in a long series of demonstrations.
