CARACAS --The Venezuelan government has asked the US military mission in Venezuela to leave offices it occupies at the country's military headquarters. Venezuelan officials said the move was not intended to worsen relations and said the request was because of a shortage of office space. However, security ties between the two countries have been strained by Venezuela's close relations with Cuba as well as President Hugo Chavez's desire to loosen the traditional alliance between the two countries. Defense Minister Jose Vicente Rangel said that the US military office also did not pay rent for the space. US officials said the mission would move as soon as office space could be found.
