Japan and the United States are close to agreeing to launch annual talks to discuss issues related to the car and car parts industries following the expiration of a bilateral trade accord at the end of last year, according to U.S. government officials and Kyodo News.
The U.S. government proposed the new talks after Japan rejected its call to renew the 1995 bilateral trade agreement aimed at boosting sales of U.S.-made cars and car parts in Japan.
The two sides are tentatively scheduled to meet the week of September 9th in Seattle or another West Coast location to discuss the structure of the new bilateral talks.
Representatives from the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), Department of State, and the Department of Commerce are expected to attend to represent the U.S. position.
