Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. said they signed distribution agreements with Porsche Cars North America to offer their satellite radio service as an option to customers in the United States. The companies said satellite radios would be offered as an option for the Porsche 2004 model year vehicle line.
The news comes just days after General Motors Corp. said it planned to offer XM's satellite radio service in 20 car and truck models in its 2003 lineup next fall (see previous article). Sirius said it also signed a deal with BMW of North America LLC to offer its service to new car buyers in select models.
XM Satellite and Sirius aim to provide U.S. listeners with 100 channels of digital-quality radio service via satellite for a monthly fee. The two rivals have been vying for deals with carmakers as a way to gain mass-market acceptance even though satellite radios will be offered in the replacement market.
XM Satellite will start its service in two cities on September 12 while Sirius expects to launch its service in the fourth quarter.
