Millennium Cell Inc., a development-stage company that has created a proprietary technology to safely generate and store hydrogen, said that it has provided the Ford Motor Co. a prototype Hydrogen on Demand fuel system for automotive application evaluation.
The system will be evaluated by Ford at the Research Laboratories in Dearborn, Michigan to validate the capabilities of the fuel system to deliver hydrogen to either a fuel cell or an internal combustion engine. "Ford Motor Co. is a demonstrated leader in the automotive industry in exploring the use of hydrogen to power both fuel cells and internal combustion engines," said Rex Luzader, Millennium Cell Vice President, Business Development -Transportation. "We are pleased that Ford has agreed to evaluate our system and are looking forward to developing a working relationship beyond this initial evaluation phase."
Millennium Cell has invented and developed a proprietary process called Hydrogen on Demand that safely generates pure hydrogen or electricity from environmentally friendly raw materials, the company said. In the process, the energy potential of hydrogen is carried in the chemical bonds of sodium borohydride, which in the presence of a particular catalyst either releases hydrogen or produces electricity.
The primary input components of the reaction are water and sodium borohydride, a derivative of borax, the company said. Borax is found in substantial natural reserves globally.
