Johnson Controls To Supply Tire Pressure Monitoring System To Chrysler Group Vehicles.(Brief Article)

Beginning in model-year 2002 Johnson Controls, Inc. will provide the Chrysler Group with its PSI - Pressure Sensing Information tire pressure monitoring system. The system will be available in the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, and the Chrysler 300M, Johnson Controls said. It marks the industry's first tire pressure monitoring system to be offered in a sport-utility vehicle, and the first direct pressure system on a minivan, the company added.

"As a company committed to consumer safety, we are pleased to be teaming up with Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler to provide our innovative tire pressure monitoring system," said Jim Geschke, vice president and general manager of electronics integration for Johnson Controls. "We believe this extra feature will provide drivers and passengers with additional peace of mind."

The PSI system uses radio frequency (RF) technology to deliver pressure information to a central receiver located in the vehicle's overhead console, through sensors mounted in each tire. If a tire becomes significantly under-inflated (by a prescribed amount), an audible and visual alert is given to warn the driver, Johnson Controls said.

With RF technology, tire pressure is accurate within one pound per square inch. According to Geschke, the PSI system results in improved performance in such key areas as fuel economy and drivability.

PSI is compatible with a wide array of tire pressure sensors, and it has been developed as a system to operate in the vehicle operating system, the company said. Johnson Controls said its PSI system can be easily integrated with the company's HomeLink Universal Transceiver. HomeLink is an electronic communications device that enables drivers to remotely activate entry gates, garage doors, entry door locks, home lighting, security systems and other radio frequency (RF) convenience products.
