Actiontec Electronics, Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., has been ranked fourth in worldwide shipments of ADSL modems with a market share of 6.4 percent in the latest 2001 Broadband Modem Market Analysis from the Cahners In-Stat Group.
The report shows that Actiontec, a new entry in the DSL modem market, shipped 117,000 ADSL modems during the second quarter of this year. These figures, according to the report, were based on sales figures reported by Actiontec and surveys conducted with DSL service providers and the providers of silicon chips.
"Already established players, such as Alcatel and Efficient, remain leaders, but Actiontec brings new competition to the DSL modem market in quarters to come," said Melissa Phillips, author of the report and Research Analyst, Networking WAN for the Cahners In-Stat Group. "Actiontec's products offer ease of installation, which is appealing to the home consumer."
"The fact that we've achieved such a high ranking after only participating in the DSL market for a few months is directly attributable to the excellent performance and competitive pricing of our products," stated Dean Chang, president and CEO of Actiontec Electronics. "Our position in the industry can only grow as the availability of ADSL service widens."
The report cites healthy growth in the digital modem market due to "the roll out of next generation products and faster deployment" with overall shipments increasing by 8 percent. It also predicts that shipments of ADSL modems will continue to increase due to a growing subscriber base and new innovative products.
ADSL modems offer lightning fast Internet access -- up to twenty-five times faster than conventional dial-up modems -- over ordinary phone lines. They also support simultaneous voice and data traffic over phone lines, enabling the modems to operate without interfering with ordinary telephone conversations. Because ADSL is "always on," the modems eliminate the annoying delay normally required for them to dial-up the service provider.
Available in USB and internal PCI version, the Actiontec Home DSL Modem includes everything users need to easily install DSL by themselves. Designed to meet the need for high speed Internet access by homes and small businesses, the Actiontec Home DSL Modem operates over ordinary telephone lines, eliminating the need for special wiring or installation by phone company representatives.
