Dana Corp. said it will close its West Jordan distribution plant near Salt Lake City, UT and lay off 141 employees. Toledo, Ohio-based Dana plans to reduce its overall work force by more than 15 percent, or 11,250 jobs, said spokesman Gary Corrigan. It also will close or consolidate about 30 plants, Corrigan said.
"There are two reasons for this," he said. "One is the market conditions of this time. The second is excess capacity. We're looking at where we can bring two together into one and have a more efficient operation." The West Jordan plant already has started phasing out its operations, Utah plant manager Michael Schwanzl said.
The work will be consolidated with another Dana distribution facility in Nashville, Tenn. The transition should be complete by July 2002. Schwanzl said the layoffs will begin in February 2002.
