The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation will soon release a document designed to highlight the country's vast intelligent transportation needs for the next ten years. The document, entitled "National Intelligent Transportation Systems Program Plan: a Ten-year Vision" will be officially unveiled during the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board, January 14th, 2002 in Washington, D.C.
The plan outlines a 10-year agenda of major public and private initiatives, which if implemented will change the face of transportation nationwide for years, if not decades to come, ITS said. The Program Plan, developed by ITS America, with input from a broad range of transportation experts and interests, establishes goals that reflect future opportunities and challenges and describes necessary actions to further develop and deploy ITS.
The Plan encourages adoption of ITS technologies where those technologies have a clear promise of enhancing safety and security, reducing congestion and delay, saving time and money and improving the environment, according to ITS. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta says, "ITS means powerful benefits in managing congestion, reducing crashes, and improving the efficiency of the trucking and transit industries. Intelligent Transportation Systems have already demonstrated their value in improving mobility and safety, not only in North America but in Europe and Asia as well."
