The increased use of plastics in external vehicle parts is made possible , in part, because of four emerging paint-free technologies, according to a new study. Mold-in-color is one of the new paint technologies, according to Alternatives to Paint Systems for Automotive Plastics, a new study by BRG Townsend, Inc. (BRG). The study examines new technologies emerging as cost-competitive alternatives to conventional painting of plastic parts.
Film insert molding (molded paint films), pad printing and aquagraphics (hydrographic ink) are the other significant technologies enabling the rapid acceptance of plastics for exterior vehicle parts in most regions, the study states.
The potential benefits of paint-free technologies for exterior automotive uses are worthy of further examination, states Frank May, Director - Automotive Practice.
Automotive manufacturers and parts producers alike are evaluating emerging technologies for their cost and environmental attributes. Among the primary benefits is the attainability of a true Class A surface finish, 100 percent color match and the utilization of the full color palette, the study said.
Other key benefits identified by the study include the elimination of costly paint lines, a reduction in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the ability to recycle more vehicle parts at end of life.
