Despite the economic downturn in the U.S. economy last year, several companies in the auto aftermarket continued to experience growing sales, according to a new report. Net sales for the surveyed aftermarket wholesalers and retailers increased an average of 8.6 percent in 2001, according to MEMA Financial Services Group (MFSG). Of the companies participating in the survey, net sales increases ranged from 18 percent to 1 percent in 2001, MEMA said.
O'Reilly Automotive was the top sales gainer in the MEMA survey with net sales increasing by 18.1 percent, followed by CSK Auto, at 17.9 percent. Other companies in the MEMA survey included Discount Auto Parts (+10.6 percent), Tractor Supply Co. (10.3 percent), AutoZone (+7.5 percent) and Genuine Parts/NAPA (+4.9 percent).
According to MFSG, the growth in sales of these major wholesalers/retailers is obtained at the expense of the smaller players since the aftermarket is experiencing minimal growth. MFSG's quarterly survey, Automotive Aftermarket Wholesale/Retail Report, compares quarterly and fiscal data on net sales, comparative store sales, net income, gross margin, operating expense, inventory turnover and store counts.
