Honda Motor overtook Nissan Motor in domestic car production volume last year to pull into second place among Japan's automakers, thanks to strong demand for the Fit subcompact and the Stream and Stepwagon minivans, according to data released by the five largest domestic automakers.
Four of the firms, with the exception of Mazda, reported declines in exports as they expanded overseas production. Toyota Motor saw domestic production fall 2.2 per cent, the first decline in two years. Its exports dropped for the first time in three years, with the automaker switching to local production for the Yaris subcompact sold in Europe.
